Heroes Book One

Schoolteacher Charlie Matthews returns to his hometown, looking to regain a sense of community, reconnect with friends, and settle down. It looks like his dreams have come true when paramedic Josh Campbell attends an accident at the school. It’s love at first sight, and a romance begins.

But Josh’s reluctance to come out to the brother who raised him puts pressure on their fledgling relationship. While Charlie understands Josh’s concerns, he can’t help growing impatient. After all, Charlie came out years ago.

It’s not until Charlie confronts his own parents and realizes he hasn’t come to terms with their rejection that he fully understands what Josh has to lose. But Josh is Charlie’s hero, and Josh will do anything to prove to Charlie that to be part of a family, he doesn’t need his parents.

This is a sweet story, with a bit - quite unnecessary - angst.
My objection: some of the difficult parts are bypassed. The reader will not get to know what could have been said. Pity. It could have been interesting.

Charlie is back home, in his hometown. He is a teacher, loving his job and and getting on quite well. Despite having been "expelled from the family" by his parents, he thrives with his life. He has his childhood friend Greg at his side. The only thing missing is a man to love. Charlie is not into casual hook-ups, he longs for a long-term relationship.

Josh who catches Charlie's eye, is a paramedic. His older brother Andrew is his only family, after they lost their father to aneurysm. Something that Andrew has said all those years ago, made Josh believe that coming out to his brother would be painful, that it could even rip them apart. Believing that, as the relationship deepens, Josh is a bit unsure what to do, when and how to tell his brother. Of course, Josh should have had more trust in his brother and his love for Josh.

Why is Josh Charlie's hero? Among other things because he spoke up to Charlie's parents on his behalf. Not that it helped much. It sounds unbelievable that parents could treat their only child, the one they were supposed to love, this way, but as it has been said before - there is still too much hatred around. So it could have happened.

But the story is simple, the friends - on both sides - are nice and come together well. Even the classical consert experience is believable. There is a cliffhanger in this story, but not directly associated with these two main characters. A cliffhanger that I have sort of expected from about halfway through the story.

Charlie's Hero (Book One-Heroes) by Nic Starr

Charlie is a schoolteacher and is returning home looking to settle down and find himself. Then one day the beautiful paramedic, Josh arrives at the school for an accident that just occurred and it's true love at first glance. The problem that faces them is that Josh is not sure how to come out to his brother who just so happens to have raised him and this is adding friction to their new and fragile relationship. Charlie is trying to be patient but he came out a long time ago and his patience is growing thin. Charlie starts to realize what Josh is going through as he confronts his own parents rejection when he came out years ago.

I completely empathized with Josh as his older brother Andrew raised him after their father died. Andrew had to grow up very fast and lost out on his own youth so he's all the family that Josh has. It was a very different story for Charlie as he had to come to terms with the rejection he received when he came out to his parents years ago. Now back in his hometown those feelings of rejection have resurfaced as he hasn't dealt with the rejection as much as he thought he had.

I really enjoyed the sub-character of Greg who is Charlie's childhood friend and I think he adds a great element to the story. My heart completely broke for Charlie with his meetings with his extremely prejudiced and hurtful parents. Unfortunately this is a very realistic component of a lot of gay men and their families. I love how Josh faced Charlie's parents and this is why he's Charlie's Hero! This is a beautiful love story filled with loyalty, trust, acceptance, love, forgiveness and beautiful hearts. I recommend this to anyone who desires a good love story as you won't be disappointed at all!!!

The story is sweet - really sweet. And there are pages and pages of long drawn out sex scenes. A small bit of tension, some blind assumptions, and frequent bits of odd behavior. The story has an odd mix of British and American slang, probably ignored by most but enough to delocalize anything in the story. I'll not be reading the rest of the series.
A sweet love story with likeable MCs. The start was slow for me as I typically find insta-love stories a little twee, but then the book takes off and it's a delightful read.
Charlie's Hero was a really good read. Loved the characters and enjoyed the story. This is book one of what should be a great series. Read it.
Simple, sweet love story

There wasn't anything really exciting to this book. It was about two men who start dating and end up falling in love. Very normal, little angst, no drama. Josh was all concerned about coming out to his brother. Charlie expressed some impatience with it but it never turned into an "or else" drama. Charlie had been rejected by his parents years before. They meet again in the book and the parents are still a**wipes. So it's just a nice story. There's sex right away but no insta-love. A lot of details could have been trimmed down. I really didn't need to know every detail of how the guy shaved his face, among other things. But it was light and enjoyable. A good antidote for some overly emotional read.
This is a beautiful MM Love story of Charlie, a school teacher, and Josh, a paramedic. The two are immediately attracted to each other with their jobs minimizes the time they spend with each other, but they make it work. Charlie is totally out, but Josh is out other than to his brother, Andrew, who has raised him since he was his mid teens. Josh was afraid what his brother might think or do because of an incident Andrew had with his best friend Tanner years ago about Tanner being gay. Charlie is patient with him because he wants so much more with Josh. As time goes on, Andrew is in a car accident, and the two end up showing their feelings right in front of Andrew. The story only gets better and you will definitely love the ending... A Great Read.
